I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Every show has its own style, its own format, and what most listeners are there for, its own personality. It doesn’t matter how great your content is, if your show has no personality, your listeners will be BORED. And if your listeners are bored, inevitably, they will STOP LISTENING.
Here are some common mistakes podcast hosts make that can suck the PERSONALITY right out of your podcast:
- Having a Rigid Show Flow – In hopes of producing a consistent show, hosts too often develop an inflexible show flow – a prescribed format that dictates what is going to be covered, in what order, and for how long. This seriously stifles your show’s potential! The best interview-based podcasts allow the chemistry between the host and the guest determine the flow. When you allow yourself the freedom pursue conversation strings down wonderful rabbit holes, you will take your show to fantastic new places you could never have planned. Your listeners will be taken on this journey and will stick with you!
- Sending Your Guests Questions Before the Interview – When you send your guests a list of scripted questions before the interview, that is exactly what you are going to get in return – scripted answers. Scripted answers are rehearsed, stiff, and mostly likely the same old content your guest has already given on another show. When guests have to answer questions on the spot, their responses are going to be more authentic and engaging, allowing them to bring their own special spark to your podcast.
Not having a show flow and not sending questions can be a SCARY concept for some hosts. But it’s time to stop trying to control your interviews, stop being BORING, and start letting the LIFE back into your show. Your listeners will thank you!
