Press Releases vs. One Sheets (What a Podcaster Wants)

When you think of a press release, what comes to mind?

I think about a document that says: “This is who I am, this is my latest book, this is something I want to promote and get a lot of press for.”

Now, if you’re trying to get a ton of press then a press release is the right thing to have!

But if you want to get interviewed on podcasts, I discourage you from sending podcasters a press release because quite frankly, it does not send the right message. Notice that: “This is who I am, this is my latest book, this is something I want to promote and get a lot of press for” is all “I” language where it’s all about what you want. You don’t want to talk about what you want when you are trying to get booked for podcast interviews. You want to talk about what the audience will gain from hearing your interview.

The message you want to send a podcaster is that you want to bring immense value to their audience (and that value may or may not come from the book that you are promoting in your press release.) In a podcast interview one sheet, you want to give a podcaster:

  •  A brief bio (Do not send a full page bio- no one will read it)
  • 3-4 potential interview topics
  • Sample questions (optional, but helpful in some instances)
  • Your branding- head shot, business logo
  • Contact information

Bottom line: if you want to get interviewed on podcasts, you need a one sheet.
